El Cerrito

I just found out a few weeks ago that there's a pyramid in Queretaro (El Cerrito). You would think that I would have known this just from driving around, but, apparently, not too long ago, it was covered fully with trees, bushes, grass. It is now cleared off on two sides, but the other two sides look like any old hill. My Spanish teacher, Alma, was the one who told me about it and invited us to go on Sunday. James was not expecting much, but when we turned the corner and started driving towards it, we were all impressed (even the kids). Our friends, the Barnetts, came with us, so the kids had some playtime as well. We took the tour (Alma translated) and learned all about it. It was very interesting and made us even more excited to see more pyramids throughout Mexico!

What it looks like from the street...it's pretty crazy, all of the
residential and commercial areas surrounding it. I always
pictured a pyramid in the middle of nothingness.

Some crazy looking cacti on the pyramid grounds

The "house" on the top of the pyramid was built much
later, in the 1500s, by the rich people who owned the
land. They wanted to be able to see what was
happening on their land at all times.

A family picture in front of El Cerrito...Lydia kept calling it a castle!

The older kids playing by the pyramid...this was right
before Ethan started screaming because a red ant was
climbing up his shoe and Ryan got bitten twice!
I wonder how this bird built this nest in the
middle of the cactus...looks painful!

After the pyramid, we went to the Barnett's (with another family, the Connells) for a BBQ. It was raining on and off the whole day, so, towards the end of the day, the kids sat down to watch a movie all together: Charlotte, Ethan, Ben, Rebecca, Nolan, Ryan, and Lydia.
