At the beginning of October, I went with Ethan's fourth grade class to Michigan's state capital, Lansing. I had gone to Michigan State for four years, right next door and never even visited the beautiful historic buildings of Lansing.
The kids have been learning about the branches of the government and how our government works (or is supposed to!). We went to the beautiful Capitol building and went on a tour. We went on a great day because we got to meet important people in Michigan government (current and past). The grandfather of one of the girls in the class we went with was a former State Representative (Gilmer), so we were able to go on the floor of the house (usually you can just go on the balcony!). He talked with our class about being a Representative and answered questions. Because of that, we were also able to go on the Senate floor and met Lieutenant Governor Calley and Senator Tonya Schuitmaker. They answered many questions from the kids as well. Those fourth graders don't realize how fortunate they are to have had that experience! After the Capitol Building, we headed to the Michigan Natural History museum which was also very interesting and we had a great tour guide! It was a fun day for everyone and the kids made our jobs easy because they were so well-behaved!
